I do the book group thing, and enjoy it. It makes me read books that I wouldn’t ordinarily choose, and think about them rather than just ploughing through. I’ve ended up reading a lot of books about the history and culture in the parts of the world where I’ve lived – Malaysia and Russia, for example – rather than the books about the type of life I quite fancy living: narcissistic skinny hipsters in New York. Aah well, can’t win them all (but you can learn something anyway).
